What is Aluminum Nitride?
Famous for its superior conductivity, thermal conductivity, and electrical insulation properties, aluminum nitride is an ideal material for the production of semiconductors. In the field of light emitter technology, it's also employed as a heater.
Property of Aluminium Nitride
Aluminum nitride is an organic compound composed of nitrogen and aluminum. It belongs to the wurtzite crystal structure and has a bandgap that is 6 eV at the temperature of ambient. This makes it suitable for applications in the field of optoelectronics with deep ultraviolet. It can also be used as an electronic circuit carrier semiconductors.
Aluminum Nitride, a very dense technical ceramic available in thin and thick versions. It is manufactured using an acid reduction process. The process could be costly, therefore an easier method of preparation should be considered. Sintering aids of various kinds were used to raise the density of the material to specifications.
The use of aluminum nitride
Aluminum nitride is a good choice to create optical materials, like nanotubes that can be used for chemical sensors. It can also be used an element of the silicon processing. It is highly resistant corrosion, oxidation, and molten metals. It is stable at elevated temperatures in an inert atmosphere.
Aluminum nitride is found in nearly every metal. It is a white to gray-blue powder. It's water-soluble and inorganic acids. However, it is unstable in a hydrogen atmosphere. It is also highly flammable.
It is employed in mobile phones to form Radio frequency filters. It is also employed in medical imaging and robotics. Its piezoelectric property is also utilized in bulk thin-film acoustic resonances.
It was reported that most of the ongoing research is focused on creation of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) powered LEDs that work in the ultraviolet where the wavelength of light is 250 nanometers. In May 2006 it was announced that a diode with inefficiency could emit light with around 210 nanometers. A single aluminum nitride crystal with an energy gap of 6.2eV calculated by the vacuum ultraviolet reflectance. Theoretically the gap allows waves with dimensions of 200 nanometers to be able to pass through. However, when it comes to implementing it commercially, there are many challenges that need to be solved. Aluminum Nitride is used in optoelectronics, for example, inductive layers used in optical storage interfaces as well as electronic chip carrier substrates with excellent thermal conductivity and military applications.
The epitaxial stretch of AlN crystals is also utilized in surface acoustic waves detectors because of the properties associated with the AlN piezoelectric effects. The detectors are put directly on silicon wafers. Only a handful of places can reliably make these thin films.
Ceramics made of aluminum nitride have high strength at room temperature and high temperatures, and a very low expansion coefficient, and a high thermal conductivity, and can be used to create heat exchangers for high-temperature structural parts.
Utilizing the resistance to corrosion of aluminum, iron and other metals and alloys Aluminum nitride can be used to make crucibles and casting mold materials to smelt Al, Cu, Ag Pb, as well as other metals.
