"Every Aspiring Individual Should Take Control Of One's Career And Not Depend On Fate!" - Sidharth Mukherjee, Director, Corporate Development, Serco Global

In continuation of our ongoing series “Biggest Challenge of My Domain” we have another gem of a contribution from Sidharth Mukherjee, Director, Corporate Development, Serco Global, sharing the biggest challenge, he has faced in his career so far. Below is the full text of his very well articulated response.

"The biggest challenge I have faced in my 13 year career has been to continuously up-skill and reshape my career. After all, each and every individual is responsible for his or her career and not our bosses!

I started off as a Process Consultant at PwC and later an IT Business Analyst at IBM. Then I underwent Lean Six Sigma training at Nortel and became a Black Belt leading Business Transformation. Subsequently, I went into the Outsourcing Advisory space with Everest Group and then into the Strategy and Planning function at Serco Group. In my current role at Serco Global Services, the BPO arm of Serco Group, I head the Corporate Development function which is a mix of Strategy, Mergers & Acquisitions, New Market Entry and Business Development.

If I look back at my career, I think it is the flexibility and eagerness to move from one functional domain to another, that has helped me frequently change my role in various organizations I have worked for. Over the course of my career, I have seen several colleagues who have preferred to focus on a single domain and become subject-matter-experts. My frequent shifting of domains has required me to continuously restart and learn about a new function and over time has made me (I think!) a more complete business leader. I still have a long way to go and expect to learn new aspects of running large and complex global businesses from those around me.

My advise to every aspiring individual is to take control of one's career and not depend on fate; be honest about one's deficiencies and work hard to plug those gaps; and finally, be hungry for knowledge and avoid being risk averse in your choice of career paths."
