Walk this way, Talk this way

There are many reasons why social media has seen such growth in recent years, but perhaps the biggest of these has been the transition from computer to mobile. Online is now the media of choice and with applications on mobiles helping more and more consumers to connect with their networks on the go.As a result, we’ve seen online behaviour increase around the world - and East Africa is no exception to this rule, with the social media craze hitting Kenya like a storm. It makes perfect sense,…See More

"This is great news. Now, couple our neutral accents, greater connectivity, major government initiative and comparatively lower cost of labour, the outsourcing industry in Kenya shall soon be out of its infancy stage."

Kenyan ‘Kollaboration’

I’ve just returned from a whirlwind tour of the US with a quick breeze through London on my return. I did manage to fit a number of new business meetings in, but this trip had a slightly different focus. This time I got to visit my old stomping ground at Dartmouth College along with visits to Harvard, MIT and Boston University business schools. It was a lot of travelling around, but it was really worth it.Since we started out in Kenya we’ve had a lot of interest both inside and outside the…See More

Kenya and the UK

My trip to the UK last week turned out to be a resounding success for KenCall and was a great sign for Kenya itself. From the interest it generated it’s clear we are really starting to get through to the right people, in the right areas. There was much more knowledge of Kenya in the outsourcing sphere and people were very open to finding out more. In a whirlwind week I managed to meet numerous people from some of the UK’s top companies whilst also managing to speak to the…See More

Professional Skillset
• The Business Process Outsourcing and contact centre outsourcing industry both in Kenya and elsewhere – KenCall initiated the BPO and contact centre industry in Kenya and Nicholas has worked in outsourcing worldwide for over 10 years. As a result his insight into the industry and the impact of outsourcing on the global economy is unparalleled.
• 21st Century customer services – the information age has broken down traditional customer service channels, meaning today’s organisations must be highly alert to serve their customers well. KenCall simplifies the process through complete customer management and helping with customer queries whenever and wherever they occur.
• Kenyan affairs – the Nesbitt family is a high profile family within Kenya with strong social links throughout the country’s government and business strata
• Kenyan business – Nicholas Nesbitt is a key figure in Kenyan business and is regularly called upon by the government in an advisory capacity. For example, Nicholas helped explain and launch the outsourcing concept to the Kenyan government. Outsourcing is now a centrepoint of the country’s ongoing Vision 2030 development plan.
• Entering new markets – setting up KenCall, Nicholas overcame government scepticism, lack of infrastructure, outdated legal specifications to ultimately make a success of the business.
• International entrepreneurship – Nicholas has worked around the globe gathering the business experience that has enhanced his international entrepreneurial skills. He has plans for developing outsourcing and related services across Africa.
• Overcoming business challenges – KenCall has overcome numerous challenges and obstacles to build a $5m+ outsourcing business in a market that did not previously exist in Kenya.
• Corporate social responsibility – Nicholas has always recognised the importance of giving back to the community and has engendered this ethos into KenCall. Its first big project saw the company set up Kenya’s first ‘emergency services’ operations centre and phone number.
About Me
Nicholas Nesbitt is the Founder and CEO of KenCall, the first and most successful of Kenya’s business process outsourcing (BPO) and contact centre services providers. He is also a Director of the Central Bank of Kenya, a high-profile Kenyan businessman and a much sought-after public speaker on Kenyan and outsourcing business affairs.

Following Kenya’s elections in 2002, after a prestigious cross-continental, education at Stanford (MBA) and Dartmouth (Masters in Engineering) and top-level business experience at Qwest Communications, US WEST and The Boston Consulting Group, Nicholas chose to return to Kenya. Returning to his place of birth meant the revival of his ultimate business dream – to kick-start an entirely new business sector in Kenya – outsourcing – and lead it from the front with his own successful company – KenCall.

By creating an entirely new market, Nicholas opened himself up directly to the inevitable challenges that new markets present. By challenging convention, existing rules and regulations and the government’s initial lack of knowledge about outsourcing, Nicholas managed to create an outsourcing business from nothing that now turns over more than US $5.5 million a year.

Nicholas is also putting KenCall to work for the Kenyan people by developing the country’s first emergency famine aid network. In response to a famine in 2008, KenCall worked to set up a three digit number for people in peril to call and the infrastructure to inform and direct the National Disaster Operations Centre to where aid/food was needed. This service now takes 12,000 calls a day.

KenCall’s continued success has brought it numerous accolades such as: Fastest growing company in KPMG’s Top 100 Mid-size companies; The Legatum Award for African Entrepreneurship ; Call Centre Focus Best Non-European Contact Centre and even Harvard Business School for its outstanding example of international entrepreneurship.

Nicholas has been frequently quoted and profiled in the media as an industry leader and visionary. He and KenCall have been covered extensively in print, TV and radio by The New York Times, The Financial Times, the BBC, The Guardian, the Star (Germany), Financial Times (Netherlands), several airline magazines and all the regional business publications in East Africa.

Nicholas is also a member of the Boards of the Kenya College of Communications and Technology (KCCT) and the Kenya School of Monetary Studies (KSMS). The President awarded Nicholas a presidential medal of honor in 2006, the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW), in recognition of his pioneering spirit in creating and growing the Kenyan BPO outsourcing industry. Nicholas is also a member of YPO (Young Presidents Organization).
