Employment in India rose by 0.61 lakh in Q4; IT/BPO leads the charge

Employment for January-March quarter of the last fiscal rose by 0.61 lakh and the maximum increase in earnings has been witnessed in the IT/BPO sectors, said the Labour Bureau in its findings.

The report said employment increased in all sectors covered under the survey except textiles, handloom and transport sectors.

"The employment in the contract category of workers also increased by 0.74 lakh and employment of direct workers decreased by 0.13 lakh," it said.

A senior official in the Labour and Employment Ministry, however, said the level of employment generation was lower than the previous quarter primarily due to engagement of employment seekers in different job-oriented courses during the season.

During October-December quarter, about 6.38 lakh jobs were created, reflecting the return of positive vibes in the job market hit by recession.

The survey covered eight selected sectors like textiles including apparels, leather, metals, automobiles, gems and jewellery, transport, IT/BPO and handloom/powerloom, covering 2,815 units and 21 centres spread across 11 states and Union Territories.

The recent survey was the sixth in the series, the first one conducted immediately after the onset of recession in October, 2008.

It said during the last one year, overall employment increased by 10.66 lakh. During this period, the increase in employment was maximum in IT/BPO sector at 6.9 lakh.

The report noted that during the quarter, all the sectors taken together registered an increase in earnings of workers by 7.1 per cent except leather units where earnings actually fell by 1.4 per cent.

The maximum increase in earnings was seen in the IT/BPO sectors where it has increased by 9.3 per cent during the period, the survey report said.
